Singer 15-1 Rebuild

Description

This Fall, when I haven't been dedicating my time to actually working in the craftroom I've been working on sewing machines. I have actually made an addiction of it, thanks to the handy dandy Craigslist.org app I have which keeps tabs on all the searches I want. In the past 3 months or so I've acquired 7 antique sewing machines. Some I've already restored, they just needed a clean up and clearcoat. Other's I've yet to start. My goal is to have 4 primary manufacturing machines in my craft room and a couple beautiful ones for decoration/show-off. The rest I'll eventually sell for a profit.

This machine will go through a moderate amount of restoration. It's a Singer 15-1 from 1886, also known as the "Improved Family" machine. It's the first domestic oscillating shuttle (bobbin hook rotates back and fourth) machine Singer produced and is actually the great grandmother to my first sewing machine, the Singer 15-91 (named Simon)

With this machine I'm going to clean the mechanics thoroughly but I may not repaint the body. This machine has been through so much use for well over a hundred years that a new paint job may just look cheesy on such an antiquated model, however I'm not dead set on that decision. Originally it had pastel flowers painted all over it along with the Singer name and I'm pretty sure I can't find those as a decal...

cool,
I remember my grandmother owning one. I used to play with it as a kid, whenever we visited her.
Unfortunately I don't know what happened to it after she passed away.

My hobby is to repair and refurbish old stuff btw.
Like old bikes, machines, small tools (like hammers, axes etc.) or furniture.
I just finished re-bluing an old sickle that was covered in a lot of rust.
And prepare the weathered handle for oiling.

My next project will a bench grinder from the late 70s early 80s.
That one will be modified though, as some parts are missing or are broken and it is not possible to bring it back to it's original form.
