Travel Case Concept Sketch by Marcusstratus Travel Case Concept Sketch by Marcusstratus
For most of June 2013 I'm going to be traveling and alas, I don't have a suitable traveling case... or at least one that will look the part with the rest of me. So salvaging old parts from a worn out suitcase I'm going to be making this one. I know how I'm going to construct it and what not, but the knit-picky bits like the shapes of the corners or the buckles I'm going to use haven't been settled yet.
As of right now, I've disassembled the old frame, cleaned it and reassembled it. I have the outer chunk of leather rough cut and will dye it and burnish it tomorrow and then give it a final cut to precise dimensions. Then I'm going to stitch the corners and add the reinforcements and once it starts taking shape I'm going to give the case rigidity by using hardboard [link] and then I'll add the corners and feet, drilling through the leather and hardboard. Then on goes the leather bound frame, handles, locks and fasteners, etc. Then to finish I've got this wonderful lining to put inside and also a partition.

This sounds awesome, and something else you could add to your line! I can't wait to see the finished product!

Indeed! This is my favorite project so far (well those shoes were fantastic) it uses leather with wood in a way that I haven't tried before (I haven't used wood with leather except for supporting handles on briefcases. But it's turning out very nicely if I say so myself.

I love the design! can't wait to see the finished work! I love how your works are stylized and functional at the same time, I find a lot of other artists sacrifice functionality for design.

Indeed, and several mass produced items sacrifice design for functionality.

Years ago I had a traveling case that had a thin, but very strong, internal wooden frame, so I could set it down on one end and sit on the other; its proportions put it at a good sitting hight.

Aye, I expect this will be similar. It has a metal frame that only functions as the hinge and supports the opening, but the rest is the hard board which I expect will hold my weight nicely.
