Fencing Illustration board by Marcusstratus Fencing Illustration board by Marcusstratus
The first assignment in my Concept Development II class was to take a sport and make a small clothing collection inspired by it. I was to make 3 complete outfits in all. What was turned in were 3 boards I assembled and then presented to the class, before submitting them to the instructor.

This is the second board, the Illustration board. Here I have the 3 complete outfits I've chosen from my preliminary sketches. I've then put them on posed croquis and illustrated them with Prismacolor markers and pencils. I then scanned them in and edited them in photoshop, cleaning them up and all.

From left to right, a vest with a knit shirt and hakama pants, an asymmetrical coat with a large poofy shirt and some baggy pants, and the third is an asymmetrical jacket with a slim fitting shirt and slim pants. The slim jacket and pants have chunks of chainmaile sewn onto them and the knit shirt and asymmetrical coat have chainmaile elbow patches (however, these aren't visible in these poses).

I think what I would like to change most if I did would be the post of the figure in the middle, so you can see more of his complete outfit, instead of just the coat and a bit of his sleeve....

I want the third one...I'd wear it because it's awesome (I love the patches, so to speak, on the pants-really cool) and then I'd fence in it.

Indeed! I've been wanting to put some of that chainmaile to use in that way for a while...

well for fencing I think meshmail would be better, its just like chainmail but with smaller rings, so the thin blade wouldnt slip between the ring, I think its also known as finemail

right, that's what's intended for these designs. The micro machine made stuff where each ring is individually welded closed.

I love them, awesome!
but isn't it very hard to walk with a skirt?

Skirt? oh, I see, the one on the left is wearing Hakama, traditional Japanese pants worn hundreds of years ago. Now they're mostly worn by eccentrics and Kendo practitioners :D

I love them. Well done with the folds and making the set work well together.
But it seems that it would be rather awkward fencing with the center Jacket if the wearer is right handed like the drawing suggests. If there was a slit following the side seam it I think would make it feel more practical. I would also pull up the chain mail a smidgen on the last one. It looks like it would make a jab to the heart would be very easy to happen. Again it just a practical thing.

hehe Indeed, well remember that these are designed for streetwear and not made for actual fencing, other wise there wouldn't even be chainmaile in the first place. But thanks for the tips :D

These are amazing! And so stylish.

I only wonder.. what material do you plan to make these out of? (if you plan to make them at all, I may be nit picking)

ah, well they're going to be made out of 100% cotton and wool. The knit shirt is wool along with the long coat. Everything else though is cotton denim, shirt weight twill or a light weight plain weave. Oh, and the tight pants and jacket that have chainmaile are made of a stretch denim with a small percentage of lycra. ummm the coats and jackets also have a silk linning.

In the final presentation I had all the fabric swatches attached to the illustration board, but since these images are just the finished photoshoped version, no fabrics are present.

Well who knows? You might be able to use the designs/patterns for another class where you actually make them, and then it wouldn't just be free time, it would be another class project.

Although I can't deny its awesomeness, I also can't help but think it's a bit impractical.
I may be wrong though, perhaps it's the fact that I've rarely seen asymmetrical clothes.

Oh sure, but this isn't intended for actual fencing, so practicality isn't a big issue here :D
