Brass Goggles

Description

Well I've finally made my own brass goggles! I was actually able to do this thanks to the guys at Got-Steam.com. Typically they don't offer only the brass lenses that they use for their goggles, but upon my request they decided to make an exception.

So I did my best to not let them down! I picked up some deliciously buttery smooth leather to furnish the rims with, but since the rims were designed for thicker leather (there are only 3 rivet holes that the leather is typically attached to) I had to drill several small holes to sew the thinner leather on. Without that extra fastening, the thinner leather would stretch away from the rims where they're not riveted. But that doesn't mean they're flimsy, I also reinforced them with layers of sturdier leather inside and plenty of bookbinding glue to hold them all together.

The leather eye pieces and nose bridge were hand sewn and then turned inside out. Since the straps were so much longer I decided to machine sew them and I managed to get that to work out great. The plates connecting the rims to the straps I also cut and shaped to fit perfectly.

I do say this is an improvement from the goggles I was wearing in the past [link] Since I made the pattern to fit my eye sockets, they fit most comfortably, and the soft leather also makes them even more comfortable. I also slipped in a bit of elastic behind the buckle and this fixes minor fit adjustments that the stiff strap can't handle and it lets me put them on without fastening the buckle every time. My overall goal is to get some prescription lenses that are tinted and use those instead of these theatrical green ones.
